EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Dec. 14 (UPI) -- New York Jets running back Curtis Martin underwent season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Wednesday.
Martin's surgery means he will not top 1,000 rushing yards in a season for the first time in his career.
Martin, 32, had started 119 straight regular-season games prior to last Sunday's 26-10 win over Oakland. He missed a start for the first time since 1998. For the season, the reigning NFL rushing champion carried the ball 220 times and had 735 yards with five touchdowns.
Last year Martin ran for 1,697 yards. Martin had rushed for at least 1,000 yards in each of his 10 seasons and would have become the first player in NFL history to start a career with 11 consecutive 1,000-yard seasons if he reached that mark this season.
Martin has 14,101 career rushing yards and 90 touchdowns and also has 3,329 receiving yards with 10 TDs.
