CARY, N.C., Dec. 11 (UPI) -- The University of Maryland beat New Mexico Sunday, 1-0, to win the College Cup final at Cary, N.C.
The game's lone goal came on a penalty kick in the 30th minute by Marc Burch. It followed a foul by the Lobos' David Gualdarama and nicked the foot of a New Mexico defender.
The Lobos were denied in the second half, when a penalty kick by Andrew Boyens, who was wide open, was blocked by Terps goalkeeper Chris Seitz.
The Terrapins had gone 0-2-1 in the NCAA Finals in the past three years. The won a share of the championship in the 2004 College Cup final when they tied Michigan State in double-overtime.
This is the second national title for Maryland this year. The field hockey team defeated Duke, 1-0, in the NCAA final in Louisville, Ky., last month.
