Vincent Young named Maxwell Award winner

ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Quarterback Vincent Young of Texas Thursday night was named winner of the 2005 Maxwell Award as the nation's top college football player.

Among other finalists for the honor were fellow quarterback Matt Leinart and running back Reggie Bush, both of Southern California. Those players also are finalists with Young for the Heisman Trophy.

Young also won the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's top quarterback. He has led the Longhorns to a 12-0 mark this season and a spot in the national championship game against USC on Jan. 4.

Young has completed 182-of-285 passes for 2,769 yards and 26 touchdowns. He leads the nation in passing efficiency at 168.6 and also has rushed for 850 yards and nine touchdowns on 136 carries -- making him the school's all-time total offense leader for a single season.

The Maxwell is presented by the Maxwell Football Club of Pennsylvania.
