OWINGS MILLS, Md., Dec. 7 (UPI) -- All-Pro linebacker Ray Lewis of Baltimore is done for the 2005 season after doctors decided Wednesday to perform surgery on his torn right hamstring.

He missed the last six games after being injured against the Chicago Bears on Oct. 23. Team medical personnel had hoped he would return to the field Sunday against Denver.

"It had great strength, the point where he could probably play, but, on re-examination, from the long-term perspective, they decided to go with the surgery," Coach Brian Billick told reporters at his weekly news conference Wednesday. "I think they went about it the right way. It's a huge loss."

In six games this season, Lewis, a first-round draft pick by the Ravens in 1996, rang up 46 tackles, one sack, one interception and one fumble recovery.

He goes to the injured reserve list for just the second time in his career.
