King sues, claiming contract breach

NEW YORK, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Boxing promoter Don King has filed a $4 million federal lawsuit in New York against heavyweight champion Chris Byrd over a contract dispute.

The petition filed on behalf of Don King Productions accused Byrd, the International Boxing Federation heavyweight champion, of costing his promoter at least $4 million by reneging on their August 2004 contract, the New York Post said.

King claimed Byrd "unreasonably" refused to participate in two major bouts against former world champion Vladimir Klitschko scheduled for April 2005 and March 2006.

Byrd also was accused of violating the terms of his contract by joining a suit against King in New Jersey, rather than in Manhattan, as allegedly stipulated in his contract, the Post reported.

Byrd's New Jersey suit alleges King failed to deliver on a contract that promises the fighter $2.5 million a bout.
