DiMaggio uniform to go on auction block

NEW YORK, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Joe DiMaggio's original New York Yankees uniform is the centerpiece of an All-Star auction of sports memorabilia this week.

DiMaggio wore the uniform during the 1936 season. He switched from No. 9 to No. 5 the next year and the pants and jersey were passed on to minor-league pitcher Charles "Smoke" Mason, who has now put it up for sale, the New York Post reported.

Other sports items going on the block at Sotheby's Saturday include Ty Cobb's bat, Ted Williams' Boston Red Sox uniform and a 1952 Mickey Mantle Topps baseball card. But the big seller of the lot could be a college football item, the plaster cast for the original Heisman trophy.

The Post predicted the cast would bring in $300,000 or more and the DiMaggio uniform $250,000, while the Ted Williams uniform is expected to fetch a more modest $60,000. For more modest spenders, baseballs autographed by legendary stars like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig are expected to bring in $10,000.
