Cardinals sign Bennett and Cruz

DALLAS, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- The St. Louis Cardinals signed catcher Gary Bennett and infielder Deivi Cruz, who were with Washington, to one-year contracts on Monday.

Bennett, 33, hit .221 with one homer and 21 RBI in 68 games for the Washington Nationals last season. Since entering the league in 1995, Bennett has posted a career .243 batting mark with 15 homers and 149 RBI in 458 games.

Cruz, also 33, began last season with San Francisco before being dealt to the Nationals prior to the trade deadline. He batted .268 with five home runs and 19 RBI in 81 games for the Giants. Then hit .255 with one RBI in 20 games for Washington.

Cruz made only four errors last season while playing at second base, third base and shortstop.
