Nationals park on RFK site still possible

WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- A top baseball official is not ruling out the possibility of a new ballpark for the Washington Nationals on the old RFK Stadium site.

Some District of Columbia Council members are pushing for the RFK site to save money. But, the city prefers a new stadium be constructed along South Capitol Street because it ties in with plans to redevelop the entire Anacostia Waterfront, the Washington Times said.

Jerry Reinsdorf, baseball's top negotiator for a stadium lease with the city, told the council that the idea of a ballpark near RFK was never rejected during talks to bring the Nationals to the nation's capital last year.

He promised Major League Baseball would reconsider the site if the city demanded it, council members said.

"I think we're going to get a stadium that works not only for the entertainment value and the morale of the city, but it's very important to get a stadium that works economically," said Mayor Anthony A. Williams.
