CLEMSON, S.C., Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Clemson quarterback Charlie Whitehurst will get to play in the Tigers' expected bowl game.

The senior from Duluth, Ga., was told by orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala., that the best course of action on his ailing right shoulder is rest and rehabilitation, not surgery. That diagnosis came after an MRI did not show any structural damage.

"I will take a couple of weeks off, then rehab, so I should be ready to go for a bowl game," Whitehurst said on the school's Web site.

He has experienced discomfort in the shoulder since the Boston College game on Sept. 24, but missed only one game, on Nov. 5 against Duke, which broke his record setting streak of 37 consecutive starts.

Whitehurst is the only starting quarterback in college football history to beat both Bobby Bowden- and Steve Spurrier-coached teams on consecutive Saturdays. He holds 40 school records, including most yards passing, most completions and most touchdown passes.
