Red Wings' Fischer stable after collapse

DETROIT, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Defenseman Jiri Fischer of the Detroit Red Wings was in stable condition in a Detroit Hospital Tuesday after collapsing with no vital signs the night before.

"He is in stable condition. He'll be here at the hospital for the next two days," team spokesman John Hahn told reporters. "He's in good spirits and doing very well."

The 25-year-old skated off the ice at 11:28 of the first period, slumped onto another player's shoulder and slid to the ground with no heartbeat. Team doctors performed CPR and used a defibrillator before he was rushed to the hospital.

The game against the Nashville Predators was canceled and will be rescheduled, the Detroit Free Press said.

Fischer had an abnormal electrocardiogram during a physical Sept. 12, 2002, at training camp in Traverse City, but he later passed follow-up tests.
