Tony Stewart claims the Nextel Cup

HOMESTEAD, Fla., Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Tony Stewart earned his second Nextel Cup Series title on Sunday despite a 15th place finish at Sunday's Ford 400 at Homestead, Fla.

He won the Cup by 52 points over Jimmie Johnson. Carl Edwards was third, Greg Biffle fourth and Mark Martin ended fifth.

"We did what we needed to do," said Stewart, who was never higher than eighth all day.

"Congratulations to Tony Stewart, he's a true champion," said Edwards. "This was a fun season, I can't wait until next year."

Biffle crossed the finish line just 0.008 seconds ahead of teammate Mark Martin, for his sixth victory of the year and ninth of his "Cup" career. Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards and Casey Mears completed the top-five -- with Dave Blaney, Ryan Newman, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon and Jeremy Mayfield completing the top-10.
