Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
SAN DIEGO, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- The New York Mets Friday dealt outfielder Mike Cameron to San Diego for infielder/outfielder Xavier Nady.
The deal had been discussed earlier this week, but was delayed until the Padres could examine Cameron's eyesight. He was involved in a nasty collision with Carlos Beltran on Aug. 11, and needed season-ending surgery to repair a fractured cheekbone and nose.
"The acquisition of Mike Cameron adds another element of speed and power to our ball club," said general manager Kevin Towers on the Padres' Web site.
The Padres are satisfied with Cameron's vision.
"To have a center-fielder like Cameron who can go get the ball is going to be beneficial, especially in our ballpark," said second baseman Mark Loretta. "This could be one of those win-win trades for both clubs."
Cameron, an 11-year veteran, batted .273 with 12 homers and 39 RBI last season. He also missed the start of 2005 while recovering from off-season wrist surgery.
