NHL: New Jersey 5, Montreal 3

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Brian Gionta scored two goals Friday night to help New Jersey top the Montreal Canadiens, 5-3.

Scott Gomez had a goal and two assists; Viktor Kozlov had one goal; Brian Rafalski and Paul Martin had two assists each; John Madden added an empty-net goal with 24 seconds remaining; and Martin Brodeur made 25 saves for New Jersey (9-8-2), which has won three of its last four outings.

Saku Koivu and Tomas Plekanec each had a goal and an assist; Craig Rivet, Saku Koivu and Sheldon Souray had one assist each; and Jose Theodore stopped 26-of-30 shots for the Canadiens (13-4-3), who have lost three of their last four contests.

Montreal was 0-for-3 on the power play while the Devils went 3-for-4. New Jersey also out-shot Montreal, 31-28.
