New Zealand bids for Rugby cup

DUBLIN, Ireland, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark joined Rugby Union officials to pitch the country's bid to host the 2011 World Cup.

The Wellington Dominion Post reported that Clark plans to tell the International Rugby Board in Dublin that New Zealand will underwrite the union's bid.

Both Australia and France pledged millions of dollars to host the 2003 and 2007 events. In Australia's case, the cup is estimated to have been worth 10 times the investment.

New Zealand lost co-host rights for the 2003 Cup because the Rugby Union could not guarantee a stadium free of advertising.
