EVANSTON, Ill., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Jerome Jackson and Kevin Grady combined to run for 169 yards and one touchdown Saturday night as Michigan beat No. 23 Northwestern, 33-17.

Jackson ran for more yards (105) than he had the entire season (102). Grady and Jackson had only combined for 404 yards rushing in the eight games before Saturday.

Quarterback Chad Henne, who was shaky at times, was 17-of-30 for 174 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. The Wolverines (6-3, 4-2 Big Ten) have won three in a row.

Brent Basanez went 26-of-49 passing for 326 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Wide receiver Mark Philmore caught nine passes for 139 yards and two scores, but freshman standout Tyrell Sutton was held to 50 yards rushing.

In the loss, the Wildcats' faint title hopes in the Big Ten all but disappeared.

This was the first time since 1959 that Northwestern was the higher-ranked team going into the contest.
