Among them were first-year eligibles Reggie White, Troy Aikman and Warren Moon.

White died of a heart ailment last December. While with Philadelphia, Green Bay and Carolina, he was a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, twice led the National Football League in sacks, and his 21 sacks for the Eagles in 1987 tied for third place on the league's all-time single-season stats list.

Aikman, now an analyst for Fox Sports, was a three-time Super Bowl winner after being the first overall draft pick by Dallas in 1989 out of UCLA. He passed for 32,942 yards and 165 touchdowns in 165 games.

Moon won five CFL Grey Cup titles in six seasons with Edmonton, Canada, then played 17 years in the NFL, passing for 49,325 yards and 291 touchdowns.

Other notables were Thurman Thomas, Joe Theismann and Phil Simms.

Hall of Fame selectors will choose 25 candidates from the preliminary list, who will then become semi-finalist nominees. The list of 25 modern-era semi-finalists will be announced later next month.
