NHL fines coaches for critical comments

NEW YORK, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Head coaches Randy Carlyle of Anaheim and Pat Quinn of Toronto both were fined Wednesday for publicly criticizing NHL game officials.

The amounts of the fines were not disclosed nor was there mention of when specifically the comments were made. The two NHL teams have not played each other this season.

In a statement, the league said the money goes to the NHL Foundation.

"Where it is right now, in spite of everybody saying 'Oh, I love the new game,' I don't love the new game," the Toronto Globe and Mail reported Quinn saying recently. "I don't think it's hockey. It's special teams situations and we've got gimmicks to decide games."

The league has come under fire for making rules changes to try to make the game more exciting and high scoring. The changes were developed when the league was idle for the 2003-04 season after owners locked out the players in a dispute over the collective bargaining agreement.
