NY Giants co-owner Wellington Mara dies

RYE, N.Y., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Wellington Mara, the co-owner of the New York Giants of the National Football League, died Tuesday at his Rye, N.Y., home of lymphatic cancer at the age of 89.

Mara's father, Tim, who died in 1959, was a charter member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Wellington Mara, the Giants' president and co-chief executive officer, was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1997, making the Maras the first father and son inducted in the hall.

In much of the 1970's, Mara served as chairman of the executive committee of the NFL Management Council, the owners group that negotiated with the players union, The New York Times said.

Under his watch, the Giants went to the Super Bowl three times, and won it twice.

Wellington Mara married Ann Mumm in 1954. She survives him together with 11 children and 40 grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were not immediately disclosed.
