Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Swede Thomas Johansson and defending champion Mikhail Youzhny of Russia were first-round winners Tuesday at the St. Petersburg Open.
Johansson, the 1997 champion, defeated German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-4, and Youzhny beat Slovakian Karol Beck in a rematch of last year's final, 6-3, 4-1, as Beck retired with a right knee injury.
In other seeded action, German Nicolas Kiefer defeated Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 and Spaniard Fernando Verdasco beat Australian Mark Philippoussis 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-2.
