MLS: Los Angeles 3, San Jose 1

CARSON, Calif., Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Landon Donovan scored two goals Sunday as Los Angeles beat the San Jose Earthquakes, 3-1, in the opener of their Western Division semifinal.

Herculez Gomez scored the other goal for the winners, who are seeded fourth in the West. Kevin Hartman made five saves for the Galaxy, who committed 21 fouls.

Ricardo Clark scored the sole goal for the Earthquakes, who finished the regular season with the best record in the league. As in other Major League Soccer series, the winner will be determined on the best combined aggregate score.

Game Two is next Sunday at San Jose.
