COL FB: California 42, Wash. State 38

BERKELEY, Calif., Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Lavelle Hawkins had a game-winning touchdown catch Saturday as No. 23 California edged Washington State, 42-38.

The pass came from quarterback Joe Ayoob, who was 19-of-35 passing for 274 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.

Marshawn Lynch gained 160 yards on 25 carries and one touchdown, Hawkins had eight receptions for 71 yards, and LaReylle Cunningham added five catches for 112 yards and one touchdown as Cal rose to 6-2 (3-2 Pac-10) after breaking a two-game losing streak. The Golden Bears, who opened the season 5-0, had dropped two of three before the victory.

Alex Brink went 18-of-39 passing for 423 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions for the Cougars (3-4, 0-4 Pac-10). Jerome Harrison added 162 rushing yards on 26 carries.

Jason Hill had six catches for 240 yards and three touchdowns, setting a new school record for most receiving touchdowns in a career with 23.
