HOUSTON, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Houston Mayor Bill White declared a No-Sox Weekend as the city sent the Astros off to Chicago to take on the White Sox.
"This is a special time for Houstonians, so whether you wear an Astro shirt or a cap or wear no socks, show your support for the hometown team," White said. "We want to send a message to our National League Champions that we are behind them all the way."
About 2,500 people showed up Friday morning for a send-off rally at Minute Maid Park, most of them heeding the mayor's words.
"I know they can win it," Miriam Alejos told the Houston Chronicle.
Alejos was not only sockless, she had written "No Sox" on her ankles with magic marker. She and her friend, Alexis Villavicencio, showed their loyalty by wearing bee costumes, a reference to the cluster of Astros' stars known as the "Killer Bees."
The series pits two hungry teams against each other. The Astros are making their first World Series appearance in there 43 years as a team, while the White Sox last became world champions in 1917, two years before the infamous Black Sox scandal when members of the team threw a series.
