DURHAM, N.C., Oct. 20 (UPI) -- USA Baseball, is slated to compete at the World Baseball Classic next March, is still without a manager.
Bob Watson, who is Major League Baseball's vice president of on-field discipline, said Thursday he is considering a number of former big league managers. Eventually, Watson, the general manager for USA Baseball, will make the hire.
"I want a guy who will not only be a good manager and a strategist, but he's got to be a good spokesman for the game," he said. "We're trying to boost baseball worldwide."
Among those on Watson's list are Davey Johnson, who formerly has managed Baltimore, Cincinnati, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets; Lloyd McClendon (recently fired by Pittsburgh); Buck Martinez (Toronto); Art Howe (Oakland); Bob Boone (Cincinnati); Larry Bowa (Philadelphia); and Don Baylor (Colorado).
