Jim Duquette joins Orioles

BALTIMORE, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- The Baltimore Orioles Thursday named Jim Duquette as vice president for baseball operations.

He will assist Executive Vice President Mike Flanagan with the club's day-to-day operations -- including contract negotiations, assisting in salary arbitration and player personnel decisions at the major league level.

"Jim brings a wealth of experience in the daily operation of a major league baseball team, from bottom to top," said Flanagan. "He has been involved in every aspect of the baseball front office from scouting and the minors to contract negotiations and running a department. We're thrilled that he sees the direction in which we are going and wants to be a part of it."

Duquette, 39, worked for the New York Mets for 14 of his 15 seasons in professional baseball. He served as the Mets' interim general manager and then as GM from June 1993 through the 2004 season, and also spent a year with the Houston Astros.
