Davenport rolls on at Zurich

ZURICH, Switzerland, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Lindsay Davenport beat Daniela Hantuchova, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, Thursday at the Zurich Open.

With the victory, Davenport assured herself the top spot in women's tennis when the new rankings are released Monday, supplanting Maria Sharapova. Davenport, who first reached the top spot in 1998, saved two match points to run her winning streak to nine.

Davenport is a three-time champion at Zurich and has been the runner-up twice. She will face Francesca Schiavone in Friday's quarterfinals.

Schiavone, last week's runner-up at the Kremlin Cup to Mary Pierce, topped Nadia Petrova 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). Petrova finished as the runner-up at Bangkok last week.

In other action Thursday, Katarina Srebotnik blitzed Amelie Mauresmo 6-2, 6-0. Other winners were Flavia Pennetta and Ana Ivanovic.

On Friday, Elena Dementieva plays Anastasia Myskina, Patty Schnyder, who won this event in 2002, tangles with Pennetta and Ivanovic faces Srebotnik.
