MILWAUKEE, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- The Milwaukee Brewers Thursday picked up the 2006 contract option on first baseman Carlos Lee.
He was traded to the Brewers in December 2004, in a deal that sent Scott Podsednik to the Chicago White Sox. The Brewers' Web site indicated that Lee's contract option was for $8.5 million.
"This was not a difficult decision for us to make," said General Manager Doug Melvin in a statement. "Carlos filled our greatest need last year by excelling in production from the middle of our order. He is established as one of the league's top run producers and exceeded our expectations from the outset."
Lee, a first-time all-star in 2005, batted .265. He belted 32 home runs and drove in 114 RBI, both career highs, and was the only team member to play in all 162 games.
