NEW YORK, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- New York Yankees manager Joe Torre announced Tuesday he wants to return for 2006.
Amid speculation that he would be fired or step down, Torre, who has two years remaining on his contract, made it clear that he wants to manage the talent-laden club.
"I still want to manage here, and I'm satisfied that George (Steinbrenner) feels that he still wants me to manage here," Torre said.
Torre just completed his 10th season as New York's skipper, the longest uninterrupted tenure of any Yankee manager since Casey Stengel's 12-year run from 1949-60.
The Yankees captured their eighth consecutive AL East crown in the season's final series against rival Boston, which won the wild card. New York was then eliminated by the LA Angels of Anaheim in the ALDS.
Torre has guided the Bronx Bombers to 10 straight postseason appearances and owns a 74-41 mark in the playoffs with New York. The Yankees are 21-11 in the World Series, 27-14 in the ALCS and 26-16 in the division series under Torre.
The club finished with a 95-67 record in 2005, boosting Torre's Yankee mark to 982-634. His overall record with the Yankees, Mets, Braves and Cardinals is 1,876-1,637.
