COLORADO SPRINGS, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Peter Ueberroth said Monday if the United States wants to bid for the 2016 Summer Games, every level of government must back it.
The U.S. Olympic Committee chairman said the rules have changed since London was awarded the 2012 Summer Games in July. He said the United States shouldn't go forward with a bid unless there is full support.
New York City was a finalist for the 2012 Summer Games, but lost its bid.
Ueberroth, who headed the organizing for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, said Monday it would take a coordinated attempt from the city, state and federal levels, along with plenty of assistance from the private sector before a final bid for 2016 can even be launched.
"The federal government has to understand the game has changed and we'll have to change to be competitive," Ueberroth said. "We don't want to enter and not win, or not have a good chance to win."
