ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Serena Williams said Saturday she will not play again in 2005 because of left ankle and knee problems.
Her last event of the season was the China Open in mid-September.
The knee and ankle ailments have bothered Williams for several months. She was scheduled for two more events this year -- the Swisscom Challenge in Zurich on Oct. 17 and the Advanta Championships on Oct. 31.
She is ranked 11th by the WTA Tour.
"My doctors and trainers have advised me that my leg needs to fully recover in order for me to play at the level that I'm accustomed to playing," Williams said in a statement from her home base in St. Petersburg, Fla.
She had one title this year -- the Australian Open in January -- and earned $1,076,226 in prize money.
"This has been such a disappointing year for me," said Williams, "because I'm such a competitive person and I like to win for myself and for my fans."
