NHL: Philadelphia 5, New Jersey 2

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Flyers erupted for three goals in the third period Friday night and beat New Jersey, 5-2.

Simon Gagne scored twice and Jon Sim, Michal Handzus and Turner Stevenson all had one goal apiece for the Flyers, who out-shot the Devils, 33-28.

Artero Nittymaki made 26 saves. He is 4-0 in four career NHL starts.

Alexander Mogilny and Jamie Langenbrunner scored goals and Paul Martin added two assists for the Devils. New Jersey's Martin Brodeur was able to stop 28 of Philadelphia's 33 shots.

Both teams are 1-1. Despite the win, the Flyers were 0-for-5 on the power play while the Devils went just 2-of-9.
