NHL: Carolina 3, Pittsburgh 2 (SO)

RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Cory Stillman scored a shootout goal Friday night to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-2 win over Pittsburgh.

Stillman also had a goal in regulation and Eric Staal scored once for Carolina (1-1), which was playing its home opener after an opening night setback at Tampa Bay.

Rookie goaltender Cam Ward made 28 saves. He made a big stop on fellow rookie Sidney Crosby in the shootout. Crosby made one assist.

Sebastien Caron made 31 saves for the Penguins (0-2).
