Montgomerie sizzles at San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Colin Montgomerie shot a 6-under-par 64 Thursday to take the first-round lead at the WGC-American Express Championship at San Francisco.

Montgomerie registered a comeback victory last week at the dunhill links championship on the European Tour.

The top two players in the world, Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh, respectively, are among a group of 11 players tied for second place at 3-under 67.

Among others at 67 were Sergio Garcia, John Daly, Mark Calcavecchia and Fred Funk. David Toms, Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson and Stewart Cink are part of a group tied for 13th at 2-under 68.

Reigning PGA Champion Phil Mickelson shot a 1-over 71 and is tied for 36th place.

2004 winner Ernie Els is not defending his title because of a knee injury. Retief Goosen also is out this week because of a groin injury.
