Tarver again beats Roy Jones, Jr.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Antonio Tarver scored a 12-round unanimous decision over Roy Jones Jr. Saturday night in a light heavyweight bout in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The two fighters have known each other since they were 13, when they fought at the Sunshine State Games in Florida. Both are 36 years old. Jones is the former undisputed light heavyweight champion and won titles in four divisions. He beat Tarver in a controversial majority decision in November of 2003, but Tarver rebounded with a second-round knockout of Jones in May of 2004.

On Saturday night, Tarver (24-3) dominated Jones, winning on two of the scorecards by 116-112 and 117-111 on another to retain the IBO light heavyweight belt.

Jones, now 49-4, was once called the best pound-for-pound fighter, but was a shell of his younger self as Tarver kept him at bay for most of the bout. Tarver landed 100 more punches (158-58).
