DOVER, Del., Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Jimmie Johnson won the MBNA RacePoints 400 Sunday at the Dover (Del.) International Speedway. It was the second race in the "Chase for the Nextel Cup."
Johnson's No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet took the checkered flag just 0.080 seconds ahead of teammate and defending series champion Kyle Busch. It was Johnson's third victory of the season. He now has 17 career wins.
Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin and Ryan Newman completed the top five. Johnson's win vaulted him to first in the championship battle, seven points ahead of Wallace (5,362 to 5,355). Newman (5,350) is third, followed by Martin (5,341). Former points leader Tony Stewart (5,339) and Greg Biffle are tied for fifth place.
The next race is scheduled for Oct. 2 at Talladega, Ala.
