CHAMPAIGN, Ill., Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Quarterback Drew Stanton threw five touchdown passes Saturday as the 22nd-ranked Michigan State Spartans posted a 61-14 rout over Illinois.

Stanton completed 20-of-26 passes for 259 yards. In his last two games, Stanton has hit on 36-of-53 passes for 586 yards and nine touchdowns.

Javon Ringer added 194 yards rushing for Michigan State (4-9, 1-0 Big Ten).

The teams played to a 7-7 tie midway through the first quarter, but Michigan State erupted with 31 unanswered points en route to a 38-7 edge at halftime.

Illinois quarterback Tim Brasic was 16-of-30 for 148 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
