Reds' Griffey done for 2005

CINCINNATI, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Injury-plagued Cincinnati Reds outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. will not play again in 2005.

The team announced on its Web site Thursday that Griffey will undergo surgery Monday to clean out both his left knee and the scar tissue surrounding the incision where he had right hamstring surgery last season.

He ends the season with a .301 batting average, 35 home runs and 92 RBI in 128 games. He ran his career home run total to 536 to tie Mickey Mantle for 12th place on the all-time list.

Griffey, who has not played since Sept. 4 because of a sprained right foot, is a top candidate for the National League Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Griffey, 35, has been injured in each of his last four seasons with the Reds and had several surgical procedures since joining the club before the 2000 season.
