Lions lose Bryant to shoulder injury

ALLEN PARK, Mich., Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Cornerback Fernando Bryant of the Detroit Lions is likely out for the rest of the 2005 season due to a dislocated left shoulder.

Bryant, 28, was hurt in the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears after he ran into teammate Kenoy Kennedy.

ESPN said the injury may not require surgery, but Coach Steve Mariucci said it was "pretty severe" and will need a considerable rehabilitation period. A decision about surgery will be made at a later time.

In March 2004, Bryant signed a six-year contract with Detroit as an unrestricted free agent. He was a first-round draft pick by Jacksonville in 1999.

He also missed six games last year because of an ankle injury. In 84 career games, Bryant has 354 solo tackles and five interceptions.

Andre' Goodman is expected to take Bryant's place.

Also, the Detroit Free Press reported safety Vernon Fox has a dislocated elbow and will miss 2-4 weeks.
