Michigan safety out for season

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- University of Michigan said Monday junior safety Ryan Mundy is expected to sit out the remainder of the season with a nerve problem.

Mundy, who started all 12 games at free safety for the Wolverines last season, played sparingly in Michigan' season-opening win against Northern Illinois and missed both the Notre Dame and Eastern Michigan games. The Pennsylvania native finished fourth on the team with 51 tackles a year ago.

"What we've decided here is that actually, what he's decided I think is that we would like to give it some rest so that we can see what happens in spring practice," Michigan Coach Lloyd Carr said Monday. "I'm not particularly encouraged. I'm disappointed that it just hasn't come around."

Mundy is expected to become a medical redshirt and keep junior eligibility for next season.
