Cano, Ortiz share AL Player of Week

NEW YORK, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano and Boston Red Sox power-hitter David Ortiz were named the American League co-Players of the Week Monday.

Cano batted .429 with a league-best 13 runs batted in and nine runs scored last week to help the Yankees post a 5-1 record. He had eight extra-base hits, including four doubles, three homers and a triple, and led the majors in total bases with 27.

Cano, in his first season in the majors, had his first career grand slam last Thursday and had five RBI and two homers on Friday against Toronto.

Ortiz, batted .385 with a league-best five home runs and a slugging percentage of 1.000 in seven games. Two of his homers were game-winners. He hit one in the 11th inning to beat Toronto on Monday and had a two-run shot to break an eighth-inning tie against the Blue Jays on Wednesday.
