MLB: Washington 5, San Diego 1

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- John Patterson retired his last 14 batters in a 5-1 Washington victory over San Diego Friday night at Petco Park.

Patterson threw just three hits in the win, with six strikeouts and no walks. It was his second complete game of the season and first win since Aug. 24.

Crisian Guzman went 2-for-4 with three RBI as the Nationals won their fourth in a row.

Washington is 2 1/2 games back in the NL wild card race behind the Houston Astros.

San Diego is in first-place in the NL West despite being below .500 on the season.
