Goosen among winners at World Match Play

SURREY, England, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen posted an 8 & 7 win Thursday over Kenneth Ferrie in the first round of the HSBC World Match Play Championship.

Goosen next faces Mark Hensby, who beat 1999 champion Colin Montgomerie, 2 & 1.

Defending U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell held off Geoff Ogilvy for a 1-up win. Campbell advances to play Steve Elkington, who defeated South African Tim Clark, 6 & 5.

Luke Donald beat European Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer, 7 & 6 and next faces Ryder Cup teammate Paul McGinley in the quarterfinals. McGinley beat two-time European Ryder Cupper Thomas Bjorn, 6 & 5.

Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal eagled the 36th hole for a 1-up win over David Howell. Olazabal, a two-time Masters winner, next plays Argentine Angel Cabrera, who beat South African Trevor Immelman, 2 & 1.
