Redskins sign rookie kicker Nick Novak

ASHBURN, Va., Sept. 13 (UPI) -- The Washington Redskins announced Tuesday they signed rookie kicker Nick Novak and released kick returner Antonio Brown.

Novak, brought in to replace injured kicker John Hall, spent four seasons at the University of Maryland. Hall suffered a quadriceps injury in last Sunday's game against Chicago and is expected to miss practice this week. The injury will likely sideline him for Monday night's game against Dallas.

Novak signed with the Chicago Bears in the off-season as an undrafted free agent, but was beaten out for the starting job by Doug Brien. Novak was then signed by the Dallas Cowboys before again losing his job at the end of the pre-season.

Novak finished his college career as the leading scorer in ACC history and tied for fifth in NCAA Division I-A history with 393 career points.
