Barry Bonds to return Monday

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- San Francisco outfielder Barry Bonds will return to the Giants' lineup Monday night against San Diego.

Bonds has not played this season because of knee problems and is on the 60-day disabled list.

The seven-time National League MVP had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Jan. 31 and March 17. Another procedure was necessary on May 2 to clean out a bacterial infection. He also underwent surgery on his left kneecap on Oct. 12, 2004.

Bonds, 41, was cleared to travel with the team after being examined by Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim head orthopedic surgeon Dr. Lewis Yocum and physical therapist Clive Brewster last Wednesday.

He has 703 career home runs -- 52 short of tying Hank Aaron's all- time record. He needs 12 more to surpass Babe Ruth for second place all-time.

Bonds likely will be used only as a pinch-hitter until he is healthy enough to play the outfield.
