MLB: Boston 3, LA Angels 2

BOSTON, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- David Ortiz homered in the bottom of the ninth Tuesday to give the Boston Red Sox a 3-2 victory over the LA Angels.

Ortiz hit a full-count pitch from Scot Shields (8-11) over the wall in right with one out and the score knotted at 2-2 for his 38th homer of the season.

Tim Wakefield (15-10) went the distance with an eight-hitter for the win. Johnny Damon had three hits to help Boston get its eighth win in its last 10 games. Boston owns a four game lead on the Yankees for first place in the AL East.

The Angels' loss was their seventh in their last 11 games and shrunk their advantage to one game over the Oakland Athletics in the AL West race.
