ATLANTA, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- John Smoltz, working seven innings, outdueled Pedro Martinez Tuesday to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 3-1 victory over the New York Mets.

Rafael Furcal and Chipper Jones each had two hits for Atlanta, which has won five of its last six games. Andruw Jones drove in a pair of runs.

Smoltz (14-6) scattered seven hits and allowed an earned run.

Martinez (13-7) took the loss for the Mets, who have dropped six of their last seven games and fell four games behind front-running Houston in the NL wild card race.
