Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

OAKLAND, Calif., Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Felix Hernandez, a 19-year-old right-hander, pitched seven shutout innings Monday as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Oakland Athletics, 2-0.
Hernandez (3-2) gave up four hits, struck out five and walked one. He has pitched at least seven innings in his last six starts.
Eddie Guardado worked the ninth to nail down his 30th save.
Adrian Beltre and Gregg Dobbs each had an RBI for the Mariners.
Oakland starter Joe Blanton (8-11) suffered the loss after giving up both runs in 6 1/3 innings. He allowed seven hits.
The Athletics fell 1 1/2 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Angels in the AL West and 1 1/2 games behind the idle New York Yankees in the AL wild-card race.
