NEW YORK, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Roger Federer
, the reigning champion, and former winner Lleyton Hewitt both had straight-set wins Friday at the U.S. Open. Federer, who has won his last 20 matches, beat Fabrice Santoro
7-5, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) in a second-round match and Hewitt finally beat Jose Acasuso 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
Other men's winners included Taylor Dent, David Nalbandian, Nicolas Kiefer, Novak Djokovic, and Fernando Gonzalez. In an upset, Paradorn Srichaphan ousted No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3.
On the women's side, Serena Williams beat Francesca Schiavone, 6-3, 6-4, sister Venus breezed past Daniela Hantuchova, 6-3, 6-3, Maria Sharapova was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Julia Schruff and Kim Clijsters pasted Ai Sugiyama, 6-1, 6-4.
