Tiger Woods leads at Boston

Sept. 2, 2005 at 9:25 PM   |   Comments

NORTON, Mass., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Tiger Woods shot 6-under-par 65 Friday to take the first-round lead of the Deutsche Bank Championship at the TPC of Boston.

Carlos Franco, Briny Baird, Steve Lowery and Billy Andrade all are tied for second place at 5-under-par 66.

Woods is the unofficial tournament host and his charity is the main beneficiary of the event because of his relationship with Deutsche Bank.

The event started Friday to allow it to take advantage of the Labor Day finish on Monday, which is a national holiday.

Defending champion Vijay Singh withdrew on Tuesday because of his ongoing back problems. Also, he contracted back spasms this week while playing table tennis with his son.

Dean Wilson, Steve Flesch, Mark Wilson, Scott Gutschewski, Will MacKenzie, Stephen Leaney, Joey Sindelar, Jonathan Byrd and Jeff Brehaut are tied for sixth at 4-under-par 67.
