COL FB: South Carolina 24, UCF 15

COLUMBIA, S.C., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Blake Mitchell threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns Thursday night as South Carolina beat Central Florida, 24-15.

The contest was Steve Spurrier's debut as the Gamecocks' coach.

In his first start, Mitchell went 18-of-23. Syvelle Newton caught six passes for 63 yards and one score, and Noah Whiteside made three receptions.

The game marked the return to the college ranks by Spurrier, who coached the NFL's Washington Redskins for two seasons (2002-2003). He had an impressive tenure at another Southeast Conference school, Florida, where he recorded 122-27-1 (.817) in 12 seasons, won seven SEC championships and one national title.

Steven Moffett went 27-of-39 for 258 yards and one touchdown for UCF, which now has dropped 16 in a row, the longest current losing streak at the Division I-A level.

Brandon Marshall had 10 receptions for 102 yards, and Mike Walker caught nine passes for 105 yards and one touchdown.
