Saints homeless at start of NFL season

NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- The New Orleans Saints may not have a home game all season after Hurricane Katrina took off huge sections of the roof and caused other damage to the Superdome.

The Washington Post reports the team and the National Football League are discussing various options for the Saints season.

The scenarios depend on the extent of the damage to the stadium and how long it will take to repair.

The first home game is scheduled for Sept. 18 against the New York Giants but damage assessments have not been completed.

The team is practicing this week in California and San Antonio, Houston, Jackson, Miss., and Baton Rouge, La., have all been mentioned as alternative homes for the Saints.

Team spokesman Greg Bensel said Saints operations will tentatively be carried out from San Antonio, where owner Tom Benson has two homes and a number of car dealerships.

Benson has mentioned possibly relocating the team there prior to the hurricane.
